Talking Down Memory Lane
The King is gone, and his princess is ready to reminisce. Beginning Jan.8 - Elvis Presley's 66th birthday - tours of his Memphis home Graceland are set to be accompanied by a 45-minute audio guide narrated by daughter Lisa Marie Presley, now 32, who lived at Graceland for nine years and continued to visit after her mother Priscilla and Elvis divorced in 1973 (A 9-year-old Lisa Marie was there the day Elvis died in 1977, frantically yelling, "Something is wrong with my daddy," as he lay alumped in a bathroom.) "Whenever he would come down the steps, you could always tell," Lisa Marie recalls for visitors. "He would have on many jewels or something, and he rattled down the steps." She notes that Elvis "read all the time ... always books of a spiritual nature. He would always underline and write quotes next to the underlinings. Like, you'll see 'Amen' with an exclamation point." And Lisa Marie says she was "absolutely awestruck" seeing her father onstage. Graceland, however, has less mythic associations. "For her," says Todd Morgan, the mansion's creative director, "we drop the ropes on the tour path, and it's a home again."
