LOVE THEE TENDER
Lisa Marie Presley and Nicolas Cage share an affinity for Elvis, old cars and each other

Leave it to a punk-rock prince to play cupid for the King of Rock and Roll's kid. Not that Lisa Marie Presley was looking for love at Ramones guitarist Johnny Ramone's 53nd-birthday party last October. After all, she was engaged to her date, Hawaiian-born musician John Ossajca. And although he came solo, Nicolas Cage was reportedly seeing his Captain Corelli's Mandolin costar Penelope Cruz. But mingling with the 18 or so guests in the cozy living room of Ramone's home in suburban Los Angeles, Presley, 33, found herself drawn into conversation with Cage, 37. Ramone says the two just "talked casually." A fellow guest, actor Vincent Galle, sensed more-and not just because Cage is famous for doing a mean Elvis riff (demonstrated in both 1990's Wild at Heart and 1992's Honeymoon in Vegas), "Nic had a very special interest in Lisa Marie," he says. "When I saw them talking, I thought, 'Uh-oh.' " He thought right. A year later the Oscar winner (for 1995's Leaving Las Vegas), who can command up to $20 million per picture, and the heir to Elvis's $100 million-plus fortune are hardly casual. The now out-and-about couple threw a party in honor of Ramone at New York City's hop Hudson Hotel after the MTV Music Awards on Sept. 6 so friends, including Sheryl Crow, Sofia Coppola and her husband, Spike Jonze, and techno artist Moby could toast the rocker.Sitting with pals on a dark back patio, says Ramone, the two were clearly "happy to be together." The pair first went public with their romance in May, taking in a Tom Jones concert in Las Vegas a month after Presley announced the end of her 16-month engagement to Oszajca, 27. Two months later Presley accompanied Cage to Washington, D.C., for a ceremony honoring Navajo Indians, whose language helped provide supersecure communications during World War II (the subject of his upcoming drama Windtalkers.) While there, the two chatted with President Bush. the night before, the couple had feasted on lobster, steak and cheesecake at the pricey Palm Restaurant. "They were very cuddly," says general manager Tommy Jacomo. they left "holding hands, in very good spirits." Later that month Cage was the one standing by-in 100 heat-as Presley cut the ribbon on a 12-unit apartment building in Memphis for homeless families built through her charitable foundation. "She is a very honest person," he told Jay Leno in August. "and I admire that quality." For her part, Presley, who is working on a debut rock album scheduled for release next year, "is happier than I've ever seen her," says Amos Newman, the vice president of Java Records. Of course, for both Presley and Cage, contentment-to say nothing of happily ever after-is a fluid state. Her six-year first marriage to muscician and fellow Scientologist Danny Keoug, 36-the father of her two children, Danielle, 12, and Benjamin, 8-ended abruptly in 1994. Less than a month later came her out-of-the-blue union with Michael Jackson, which went from odd to over in 20 months. But even that arrangement seemed more conventional than Cage's romantic round-robin with his ex-wife, actress Patricia Arquette, 33. Cage proposed to Arquette the first time he met her, at Canter's Deli in Los Angeles in 1987. After a brief fling, they went their separate ways: His included having a son, Weston, 10, with actress Christina Fulton in 1990 and becoming briefly engaged to model Kristen Zang in 1994. The next year he again ran into Arquette at Canter's, and two weeks later they were married. They separated nine months later, making occasional public appearances until divorcing this May. This time, pals are hopeful for smoother sailing, a favorite pastime, as it happens, for them both. When not spending time with their kids (both have joint custody) at her L.A. home or his $7 million Bel-Air place, they like to get awqay on his boat (named Weston). Fans of music ("Nic is very supportive of her career," says Newman) and vintage cars (his collection includes Jaguars, Corvettes and Feraris; hers, inherited from her dad, boasts Cadillacs and others from the '50's, and '60's), the couple spent a casual evening on Sept. 1 "smiling and talking" at Catalina Island's Landing restaurant. Says one observer: "They talk to each other a lot." Ramone, for one, hopes the conversation continues. As he says, "If it clicks, it clicks."

MGM delays ``Windtalkers'' debut to summer, 2002
LOS ANGELES, (Reuters) - Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Inc. decided Friday to delay releasing its big-budget World War II film, ``Windtalkers,'' until next summer to avoid the box office uncertainty that has beset Hollywood since the Sept. 11 attacks on America.
``There's so much uncertainty right now and we don't want to spend a lot of money on promoting the film,'' the film's producer, Terence Chang, told Reuters.
The movie, set for release on Nov. 9, was expected to be a major entry for the Thanksgiving holiday season. It has now been pushed to June 14, 2002, MGM said in a news release.
MGM did not want to risk a bad showing at the box office by releasing it at a time when ticket sales are down due to the somber national mood in the wake of the Sept. 11 attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon (news - web sites), Chang said.
``Windtalkers,'' based on a true story, was directed by action specialist John Woo and stars Nicholas Cage. It tells a tale of Native Americans who helped to thwart Japanese code breakers during World War II by transmitting war plans in the Navajo language.
``We feel certain this great film will be enjoyed by the broadest possible audience during the strong summer play period,'' Robert Levin, president of worldwide theatrical marketing and distribution, said in the MGM statement.

Star-struck
PHILLY MAKES THE 'A LIST'

MAKING CENTER City their own over the weekend were two Hollywood leading men - Mel Gibson and Nicolas Cage.

Gibson made the scene with a male pal (reportedly a doctor) while Cage clung to current love Lisa Marie Presley. Also along for part of the ride was her daughter, Danielle, 12, and his son Weston, 10.

Saturday night (Sept.8th) was a marathon as Nick, Lisa and the kids rolled into La Veranda (Pier 3) at 10 p.m. and were treated to a huge meal - a little bit of most everything on the menu. Lisa Marie was in jeans and a stylish blue T-shirt, while Cage was in a rust-colored Prada suit.

After dinner (and dumping the kids and picking up friends in their limo), they zoomed to Zanzibar Blue (Broad & Walnut) for a sampling of desserts (Lisa Marie loved the lemon meringue martini) washed down by drinks - Glenlivet 18 on the rocks for him, Belvedere for her.

Then they were off to Warmdaddy's (4 S. Front), where musician Bobby Rush was held over for their 1:30 a.m. arrival. More Glenlivet for Nick, while Lisa Marie switched to Absolut and grapefruit juice. They left around 2, strolled past Swanky Bubbles (10 S. Front), which was closing but reopened for the star party.

They asked for disco to be played, and Nick and Lisa Marie danced and nuzzled while the group guzzled four bottles of Cristal champagne ($400 each) and hung until about 5:30 a.m. (2:30 Left Coast time).

Rocking Through the Night
J.Lo's after-party was one of several Thursday night. Nicolas Cage and Lisa Marie Presley threw a dinner for punk rocker Johnny Ramone at the Hudson Hotel. The band U2 shared their MTV Video Vanguard Award with the Ramones, who lost their lead singer, Joey, to cancer earlier this year. Also dropping by to pay tribute were Sheryl Crow, Moby, Estella Warren and Sofia Coppola with husband Spike Jonze.

After eating, Moby pulled the American flag from his astronaut statuette to use as a toothpick. Sheryl Crow huddled with Presley for hours.
